Making improvements to heating and cooling

My friends and I play poker together every Friday evening.

We switch between each other’s homes on a rotating weekly basis.

I live in an old farmhouse that is sizable. It was constructed sometime in the late eighteen hundreds. The house isn’t set up with a central heating or air conditioning. I always managed the Summer heat with window air conditioners. Because I don’t have access to conventional ductwork, I assumed this was the only option. The window air conditioners weren’t overly expensive and installation didn’t require me to tear down walls. They were sufficient for comfort in a single room. I only ever occupy one room at a time. The Friday night that I hosted our card game, I realized the indoor conditions felt especially overheated and humid. I turned up every window cooling unit to max speed and plugged in some electric fans, hoping to cool the place down. My friends and I attempted to play poker at my dining room table. I directed the vents of the air conditioner directly at us but this blew our cards around. After about 45 minutes, we decided it wasn’t worth it. My house was just too uncomfortable. Noticing that it felt cooler outside because of a slight breeze, we moved to the back patio. It felt better than the horrendous heat of my dining room. My friends joked that I shouldn’t be allowed to host poker night when the weather was overly hot or cold. After that, I finally started looking into alternatives for central air conditioning. I wasn’t aware that there are systems specifically designed for older homes that lack ductwork. I have since installed a high velocity HVAC unit and whole-home comfort is no longer a problem. I am anxious to host poker night this month.
