There is a lot to keep track of as a homeowner, so sometimes, you might end up missing something while paying attention to other things. Unfortunately for people like me, it doesn’t help if you don’t know what you’re supposed to do to begin with. Apparently, I’ve been waiting far too long to change out my A/C filters. I know this doesn’t sound good, but the only time I really changed out the HVAC filters was whenever I happened to remember it. Which usually wasn’t for 6 months or so. So the entire time, dirt, dander and hair were all building not only in the filter, but in my air as well. Gross I know. Anyways, it actually wasn’t until I was talking to a HVAC specialist and he mentioned how often he has to change his furnace filter due to his pets. He talked about changing his filter monthly, which I found to be pretty often. I thought at first it was just because of his pets, but when I told him how long I usually went before changing mine, he stared at me shocked. That is when I discovered that I am supposed to change the filters out every 3 months. So I was waiting double the amount of time I was supposed to have changed the filters out. Then the heating and air conditioning guy told me this, and also told me how bad it was to have my HVAC machine go that long without getting a new filter. Well, now I feel a bit stupid, but at least I know for the future.
