Residential HVAC wasn’t always around

They packed up and spent more than 500 dollars to stay in a hotel so they could have HVAC cooling.

It’s sort of hard to fathom what life would be like without all the things that we so totally take for granted. I watch people suffer a near complete meltdown over the fact that they aren’t getting the cell reception they need. Can you imagine telling that person that they would have to do without residential HVAC? That might induce some sort of catatonic state for sure. But we just never really consider that the HVAC technology we simply expect hasn’t been around forever. The fact is that modern residential HVAC didn’t really hit the scene until the 1950’s. That’s before my time but my grandparents came up in this region without any sort of HVAC cooling. I remember my grandpa telling stories about how they dealt with the heat and humidity in this area without the benefit of air conditioning. And I really don’t think that our current culture would be anywhere near up to the task. We are all so soft now that the idea of just going a couple of days without air conditioning is reason to flip out. I have a neighbor whose heat pump went out and couldn’t be replaced for 3 days. They packed up and spent more than 500 dollars to stay in a hotel so they could have HVAC cooling. And it wasn’t even the middle of summer! While I can’t imagine going the entire summer with HVAC cooling, I think perhaps I could manage a few days. But then again, I keep my house in the 80’s during the peak heating hours of the day during the summer. So maybe I’m a bit more equipped.
