Last week, I helped my son build a hedgehog habitat.
He has been asking to get a hedgehog for years now, but I never wanted to get one.
I always heard that hedgehogs poop like crazy, and that just wasn’t something that I wanted to have to deal with. However, my son decided that he needed to get a hedgehog or that he was never going to be happy. He saved up all of his money and he promised to be responsible and take care of the hedgehog all by himself. I still had reservations about this kind of pet, but I finally gave in and let him buy one. At that point, I didn’t know that I was going to have to work so hard on building a habitat for him too! Apparently, whenever you are building a habitat for this kind of animal, you have to be super careful about the heating system that you install. Animals like this have to have a built in thermostat and a temperature setting in a certain range or they will die. I felt like there was a lot of pressure being put on me to get everything exactly right or the hedgehog would die! I feel like dads have to do a lot of crazy stuff sometimes just so that their kids will be happy. Anyway, we put in the right kind of heating system and we installed a special thermostat unit just for the hedgehog. Now, we are going to get a heating mat for the little creature so that it can be extra warm whenever it’s laying around inside of its cage.
