Odd smell in the house after lighting the furnace

We just came off a very long winter and I was thrilled when we were able to shut down the HVAC system for a few days.

I was really hoping that it was the end of having to use it for the season but with an unexpected cold front coming in we decided to turn it back on.

I should have known better than to think we were done because it is only the middle of March but the weather has been so nice that I was hopeful. At any rate we turned the furnace back on and noticed that there was an odd smell in the house that we hadn’t had before. My wife said that it smelled like something was burning and wasn’t sure why that would be the case. The smell continued each time the furnace kicked on and I became concerned that there was a serious problem. I called our HVAC dealer and had them schedule an appointment to have a technician come out right away. I didn’t want to run the risk of a problem that could cause a fire so we shut off the furnace until they arrived. Once the technician had done his inspection he came back to inform us that one of the circuits in the furnace had malfunctioned and it was causing the unit to overheat. I couldn’t understand why that would have happened all of a sudden thought he said with older systems like ours sometimes these things just do. He recommended that we have an electrical panel inside the HVAC system replaced and also left us with a brochure for a new unit if we were interested.
