When I walked into my father’s HVAC company after graduating from college, I knew I wanted to be an HVAC technician.
Dad thought I was lowering myself going from a college graduate to being an HVAC technician, but it was what I had always wanted to do.
My dad offered to give me a job while thinking over my decision. He hired me to work in the company, but as a parts person and cleaner. I could understand what scrubbing and packing parts had to do with being an HVAC technician. I asked dad if he was sure this was required to become an HVAC technician? He told me that if I wanted to work in his company, it was definitely a requirement. After talking to several other HVAC technicians, they told me that dad had put them through the same training. He wanted to make sure that every HVAC technicians would be willing to do more than what they were trained to do. It was good to know your job, but you also had to be a player with the rest of the job. Everyone worked hard and do everything that is needed to keep the HVAC company running. I was glad to hear that I wasn’t being singled out just because I was the HVAC company’s owner’s son. Dad laughed when I told him how I had grilled the other HVAC technicians about my methods. He told me that he would never treat one prospective HVAC technician any different from another HVAC technician, no matter whose son he was.
