I told my son he had to get out there and sell himself.

When my son turned twenty-one, he was still living with me.

I knew he had to grow up and get a job someday, and I was going to force the issue.

I told him he had to get a job, even though I knew he didn’t have any qualifications. He hadn’t gone to college and he didn’t have a trade. When he asked what I expected him to do, I told him to get there and sell himself. I didn’t want him to come home until he had a job offer. Two weeks later, he came back home. He told me he hoped I was proud of myself. He had just signed up to go back to school. This isn’t what I expected, but I was sure it was a move in the right direction. He told me the only job he was offered was working in a parts room at the local HVAC company. If he was going to work in the HVAC company, he wanted the money he deserved, and he decided to go to school and take HVAC certification classes. I was proud that he made this decision and only hoped he was going to take it seriously. That was almost fifteen years ago, and he is now the owner of an HVAC company. He has made a lot of strides since that day, and I am proud to say he’s one of the best HVAC technicians in the entire state. I also know he has one of the best HVAC companies in the state, and he is getting ready to open his second office in about a month.
