I’ve been volunteering at a local senior center to get some community service hours.
I have to apply to a college scholarship that requires a number of hours, and I’m very close to reaching the end.
I didn’t think I’d like it, but the senior center has been a fun experience. I oddly had to learn a lot about air conditioning. The residents that live there tend to have very specific air conditioning requests because they are a little sensitive. All of those things you hear about old people thinking the AC is always too cold and wear warm clothes all year long are kind of true. I had to coordinate an A/C care program with a local air conditioning company to ensure that the HVAC system was always in proper working condition. The A/C care plan was really a fall safe plan because the front desk staff tends to have high turnovers, which is a part of the reason I landed the volunteer gig in the first place. I will say that having the plan kept the air conditioning running really well, and all of the residents seemed happier when the air purification was clean and pure. Quality air is really important for those with respiratory issues, or any type of immune condition. I’m sad to be leaving the senior center soon. It’s a wonderful place, and I made some friends with the residents. They are so sweet and remind me of my grandparents. I miss them very much, so I think hanging with the residents really made me feel whole again.
